Children

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me…” (Matthew 19:14), but this command is not as simple as it sounds. Sometimes just getting the kids up and organised for church is a challenge! Although parents have the most important role in nurturing their children’s faith, as a community of faith we want to do our part.

Letting children come to Christ means more than just expecting them to take a quiet place in the pews. Nativity is committed to finding ways of helping children explore what it means to be Christian. We want them to know that they are loved by God and that God’s word is relevant to their lives. We want to provide opportunities to have fun and build the friendships needed to enthuse and encourage one another. We also want to let them discover and share the gifts God has given them.

With the above goals in mind, specialised programmes for children run on Sunday mornings such as First Steps creche (0-4 year olds), Nativity Kids (4 - 10 year olds) and Double Edge (11 & 12 year olds).

Remember, there are a couple of things that Kids should never do alone:
1) Cross the street by themselves; 2) Talk to strangers; 3) Surf alone
Parents - PLEASE surf with your kids!

Nativity Kids is all about getting kids involved - making the Christian faith real and meaningful for them. It is hands on, fun, and aimed at helping our four to ten year olds (Year 6 at school) learn what it means to follow Jesus.

After spending some time together in church, we all head through to the hall. In an interactive and dynamic programme, Kids learn about the theme for the week, sing, and from time to time meet other characters like Rat and Bignose.

Following the time together, Noah's (for children from 4 to school year 2) heads off to the Scout Den for small group time. There the small group shepherds guide the children through activities and help them think through what they have just learned in the hall.

At the same time, Kids on Sunday (School years 3 to 6) also breaks into small groups. These groups have the same purpose as the Noah's groups but use activities more appropriate to older children.

After the small group time, the children come together to share what they’ve learned and for a final song.

See you there...

First Steps

Nativity is a church that welcomes and values people of all ages and our youngest are no exception.

The pre-schoolers leave the service at 10.15am along with the older children and make their way to Nativity Lounge to enjoy a programme especially designed just for them.

Our Current Newsletter

Dear Church,

Over the past term we have been revising the ‘First Steps' (aka Crèche) programme, our aims being:

  • To have fun
  • To introduce the major Bible stories to the Children accurately and     logically
  • To be in step with the church, regards the big festivals of the church year: notably Christmas, Easter and Pentecost.

In future, the first half of the year will be spent in the New Testament [mainly Jesus stories] and the second half in the Old Testament, except when Advent arrives. Because of the age of the children our program will recycle every 2 years.

[For those of us studying ‘Christian Worship' and reading the preface of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer it was amazing to discover some aims in common, ie. a systematic reading of the Bible in a language understood by the recipients, to give knowledge of God!]

This term in First Steps we will be introducing stories from the first book in the bible, Genesis [meaning ‘beginning'] The stories we will be covering are:

Creation

Adam and Eve/The fall

Noah's Ark

Abraham

Jacob (aka Israel)

Our programme is based around "The Beginner's Bible," a Bible full of pictures and written in a language its recipients understand! We encourage you to read these stories with your child/grandchild/little friend at home. The church has copies you could purchase or borrow.  Please contact Susan Howarth for this.  If you have any questions, handy hints, great ideas or concerns please feel free to talk with any of us anytime.

Also, of most importance, please pray for the littlest members of the church as they take their first steps in what we pray will be a life-long walk with God; that they will have fun and come to know that God loves them.  As with many other ministries in the church this group is growing in number so please pray also for energetic and loving assistants with the resources to grow these children in God.

Yours in Christ,

Alyson, Raewyn and Roz
