Preparing for Pentecost

30/5/2017

The disciples of Jesus went to the room upstairs where they were staying, ... All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. (Acts 1 v13-14)
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.  Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2 v1-4)

Wednesday evening, 31 May, people who have high regard for Jesus are gathering to wait in prayer like the first disciples. It's a 2 hour vigil from 5.30 to 7.30pm in St Barnabas Chapel (aka Barnies), beside Nativity Church.
Everyone is welcome for any part, or all, of this 2 hour vigil. This time of prayer will focus on knowing the Holy Spirit in our lives as we remember and celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples at Pentecost, 2000 years ago.
The Nativity Care Cell who prepared this have been prayerfully working on it for months. I invite you to come with me, and join them, "devoting yourselves to prayer" (maybe after the 5.30pm half hour combined churches prayer at Blenheim Baptist.)

The Church in Blenheim - Together!

This evening was really quite something. No - not the unusual sea fog that was in parts of town for a wee while.
It was because a whole bunch of people from at least 7 different local churches, from Catholic to Pentecostal, met in Barnies (beside Nativity) to pray for and as the church, in Blenheim. And we're going to keep doing that from 5.30 to 6pm each night this week until Saturday. On Sunday night it'll be 5pm. That's prompted by the Annual combined churches Pentecost service this Sunday evening, 6pm at Elim. The offering is to help support the Wairau Hospital Chaplaincy.
Tonight we started by reading chapters 14 to 17 of John's Gospel. In that Jesus told how he would have to leave them, but then send his Holy Spirit to empower his followers to do the things he did. Then he prayed for us in one of the most profound prayers recorded. He did that the night before he died.
If you are in town this week get along to as many of these prayer gatherings as you can.

So ...
Prayer to Pentecost:
A combined churches week of prayer leading to Pentecost. Monday 29th to Saturday 3rd June, 5.30pm - 6pm.
Monday: Barnies (by Nativity)
Tuesday: St Ninians, Alabama Rd
Wednesday: Baptist, Beaver Rd
Thurs: Oasis, at Wesley Centre, Henry St
Fri: Salvation Army, Seymour St
Sat: C3, at NMIT in Budge St
Sun: 5pm, Elim, in Burleigh Rd prior to a combined Pentecost service at 6pm.
Stronger Together ... in Prayer!
